Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo

 Oh, this I liked.

- I didn't really know the story of Count of Monte Cristo, besides, like, it's a revenge story? But the actual details are murky to me. So IDK how different this adaptation is from the original. Can pretty easily guess it's not a scifi, though.

- Loved the music! Music was so great!

- The art style was great. It was decadent, and IDK what texture they chose to go with the Count's hair, but I loved that dark blue marble hue.

- Also kind of dug the narrator speaking french? Like. It felt very classy! And then to find out that the narrator was Gankutsuou? Super great.

- Super loved the Count. SHOULD HAVE GUESSED, BUT NO. It took me the majority of the show to be like, oh I kind of dig him? Like. Okay. He was gorgeous from the start. He was a blue skinned vampire with pointy ears and heterochromatic eyes. I 100% got why everyone wanted to fuck him from the start. I also kind of loved his -- fall from humanity, as the revenge continued, he lost more and more of his humanity, until he really was devoured by Gankutsuou.

- The crowning moment, though, was when the Count broke down in tears, genuinely sad, and then starts laughing, deliriously happy. I don't know why I liked that moment so much, but I did.

- I wasn't that invested in Albert/Count, which, considering it became the heart of the show, is a shame? But I -- the Count was in love with Albert's mother years ago, and I liked that ship, that I kind of found the idea of him falling for Albert because of that (not to mention that Albert is fifteen) kind of icky? But I liked that Albert reminded the Count of his former, more innocent and idealistic self. I liked that Albert was still able to save the Count, despite the cruelty. So I liked aspects of the relationship, but I didn't really care much for it romantically.

- IDK why I got endeared to the idea of Albert/Haydee, but at some point I just. Started really liking it.

- My issue with Albert/Eugenie, was that I think Eugenie is a lesbian in the original novel, so making Eugenie fall in love with Albert was... not a great choice, IMO? Kind of wierd, considering that?

- I honestly like the idea of two people not wanting to be together because they're arranged, but actually once the arrangement is broken, the two realize that um, actually, they kind of like each other? But I -- I'm not sure I bought this love story, regardless.

- I kind of did like the divide between marrying for love and marrying for duty, and I don't really think one is better than the other, TBH, since love can always come later (maybe), but, um, not really sure that's explored that well in this series.

- I was sad when Franz died. Really liked his character. Very sad about all of his storyline, especially considering he has a really good head on him.

- I loved when this show remembered that it was a scifi show, and that people just say 'went to prison in space', and other stuff that kind of make me giggle.

- Man, it was so good to see the Count's revenge pay off. Like, I spent a good deal kind of wondering what these three men had done to him, and just. Yeah, it was kind of awesome to see him get his just desserts. Did he go overboard, yes. Did I mind, no, they were terrible people.

- Really want to a) read the book, which I've bought, but I need some time to forget the anime, and b) watch the english dub. I don't normally do the latter, but I genuinely love the voice actor they cast for the Count, and really, that's all I need to be convinced. Regardless the quality of the others -- which may be good! IDK! -- I want to listen because of the Count.

Overall, super loved. 10/10.
