Shokugeki no Souma: Gou no Sara / Food Wars: Fifth Plate
Well, it ended. Maybe a little generically, but I'd say it sometimes had it's moments.
- I probably only liked the villain this time around because I enjoyed the voice actor. I just love Fukuyama Jun, okay! He's so fun to listen to! Did I enjoy his ridiculous copy magic? Also yes, but it was a little tiresome that he would win *every* match except for Souma's. His backstory made even less sense, but oh well.
- I wish there was more fallout from Asahi Saiba from Noir, or more: reconciliation between him finding out who his biological father was? Like after the shit he pulled, I wouldn't want Erina to instantly welcome him to the family.
- In a lot of ways, this felt like an extra season? Like, the majority of threads were resolved in the previous arc, you have a time skip, and just. I didn't mind that the story continued, but you could have easily have said that Fourth Plate was the final season because it felt like a natural conclusion, and retconning sort of had to happen to make s5 make sense, in a way.
- I do not understand why this show continues to want Souma/Erina to be it's endgame! They reverted Erina to her s1 self, which is just: peak unlikeability, all for what? IDK! IDC! It kinda sucked!
- Literally nobody got to do anything except for Souma and Erina TBH!!! It felt a lot more glaring here though.
- Takumi and Isami did nothing. Megumi did nothing. Eizen had a chance to be a good guy, but most of it was offscreen. Alice did nothing. Ryou and Akira had their own subplot, but mostly happened offscreen.
- In the end, this just lost so much steam. It stopped caring about the making of food, it stopped caring about every character who wasn't Souma and Erina, TBH, and really? Erina should have lost the match against Souma, because losing would do her some good, IMO. Erina should have said Souma's food is delicious, because they set up the final episode to the first episode, and really, I hate the ship so much. Megumi was my favourite, and at least she got an okay overall arc, IMO. Erina's was probably the best, since they focused on defrosting her and making her much less aloof, but in that case, why wasn't Erina the main character, since this show is all about her family drama than Souma's.
- Why the hell is God's Tongue now a curse and apparently everyone knows it? Awful! It should have been foreshadowed that it's a curse, when every season apart from the last have been like 'it's a gift! a blessing!', and literally no one was like 'actually, there's a downside to it...'
- I cannot believe that my one curiosity to see if SnS would deal in allergies DID happen, but offscreen, and Takumi says "it was a terrible", like no!!! you're a chef!! rise to the challenge!! find the fun in overcoming the obstacle and delivering on the flavour with alternative means!!!
- I swear Yakitate Japan has ruined me, because Yakitate Japan wouldn't treat me like this! Yakitate Japan cared about the food process NON-STOP, and it loved all it's characters! And I'm just. Bitter. Because I want to love food shows, and SNS just didn't... deliver. At least the food always looked good, even if it relied on telling rather than showing.
6/10. I'm happy for Souma and all, but I wish for better TBH.
