Start Up
Ugh. It had a good start, and then went down the drain pretty quickly after that.
- It's just. Oh boy I dislike the lead a lot. I don't like that he got everything pretty much handed to him on a silver platter. He just whined a lot and got everything he asked for which, I disliked TBH. His immaturity was beyond exasperating!
- Oh my god, I didn't mind SamSan Tech to begin with, but hey, Do-san, Yong-san, Chul-san all turned out to be awful. Do-san, the lead, obviously, just whined a lot. Yong-san, I could not believe had a revenge plot! Not just any revenge plot, but to blame his brother's suicide on Han Ji Pyeong because HJP gave him a few harsh words (but fair too, since other people would have said the same thing), and then Chul-san, who hit on Sa-Ha all the time, who was never interested in him, but ends up with her anyway, and then acts really jealously when he thinks she's getting too close to Yong-san, was just. I was done with them. It's not cute. That was the worst part, how often Chul-san's interest in Sa-ha was played for comedy, and it was just kind of uncomfortable to watch.
- Also the revenge plot could have been utilized so much better. It's vaguely hinted at in the first half, except not at all, for Yong-san to say to HJP that he killed his brother in episode ten, the reveal of how that happened in episode eleven, and just. It was awful? Like, I'm glad that it caused HJP to reflect on how he deals out truths, harsh but fair, all the same; and I'm glad that Yong-san later on says that he just needed someone to blame for his brother's death, and he apologizes for that, but it was so badly placed and utilized that it makes me mad all the same.
- Listen, I wish they could have made Chul-san/Sa-Ha a good ship. A cute ship. But it really just felt mostly one-sided and kind of harassment instead. It's not that Sa-Ha's feelings for Chul-san came out of nowhere, because there was buildup, and Sa-Ha was a person that was kind of -- bad with her feelings, and actions meant more to her, really, but. I still wish they could have been just friends.
- I could have cared about the Seo Dal-mi and Won In-jae sister bond, but my god, that got forgotten quick. It deserved better, but apparently everything got resolved during a time skip really?
- I am so sad that Seo Dal-mi, who starts off as no-nonsense and feisty, kind of just devolves into someone who continually must depend on Nam Do-san to rescue her. It's so sad, because the first eight episodes, she was so fucking capable, and even if she was out of her depth, her struggles felt pretty real.
- But mostly I am sad for Han Ji Pyeong. I admit it, I really liked this actor best. He made me feel for the character since day one, because he's just really talented. I just liked how HJP was so hungry for love, but also really scared of love, and he wanted to pay back Halmoni, because she was kind to him when he was a child, and he constantly wanted to pay back the favour, and god, HJP and Halmoni were really the only storyline that I could invest in and cry because it was so good, and lovely, and lonely.
- And I wanted that for Ji Pyeong and Dal-mi. I did. If I preferred one side of the love triangle, it was them, because HJP wanted to confess after Dal-mi knew the truth about the letters, and that the Do-san who wrote them wasn't the Do-san she knew. Because, the thing is, I liked their connection, in spite of the letters. I liked HJP being a mentor/big brother to Dal-mi, who would not let him shy away from her.
- But at the same time, it was so obvious she was going to end up with Nam Do-san, even if I despised him in the end. So HJP never had a chance. HJP played it too safe, wheres NDS took risks all the time. But -- you could so easily say that NDS got lucky, every single time, rather than actual hard work and perseverance. So the HJP/SDM scenes should have been more romantic/played up far more reciprocal, if the showrunners wanted me to really truly ship them romantically, so now I'm just left wishing that it remained platonic, because again and again, HJP gets hurt, and for what?
- And at least with HJP and Halmoni, they gave me a satisfying ending. That she wants him to be in her life forever, that he should call her up whenever, that's when it was most painful and emotional and true. I truly wish these two actors act again together, because they deserve better, and it was always such a joy to watch them interact.
- Also, I fricking love Yeo Jin Goo's voice. I love that he was in every episode, just vocally. I didn't really recognize him, on some level he did sound familiar, but then he appeared in the final episode, and it was so cute! I liked that HJP got to know the voice of his clock!
- Mostly, though, as well, I'm sad about the letters. They drove the first half of the plot, and then as soon as the reveal happened, it was if everything was forgotten except for the love triangle, and the letters were no longer relevant. Where was the conversation Dalmi should have had with Halmoni about the letters. Why did Dalmi only talk about the letters with HJP in the final episode. It's always, such, such a shame that they just went nowhere, except for the penultimate episode where Nam Do San refuses to give the letters back to HJP??? What the hell, they were never his!
- Also, Dalmi should have hated NDS and HJP both for lying to her, but she'd practically forgiven them halfway through the next epsiode, and really, they should have grovelled more.
- I'm sorry, I can't be bothered with Won In-jae. Apparently some people shipped her with HJP, and I just. Don't think I could see it. I didn't like that she trashes her biological father and then steals the story about Sandbox and claims that she's the girl on the swing. I moderately liked her with Dal-mi with the sister-war of trying to outdo each other, but again, this got dropped. In-jae often felt ignored and didn't get enough time to be fleshed out. So, I wish her character had developed better than what we got.
- Really hated how the first half had Dal-mi's and In-jae's mother wander around and be incompetent at everything. I just. Hated her, and I hated that subplot, and I just really wouldn't have forgiven her.
- I kind of respect Alex for being that cutthroat and terrible, and discarding everyone in SamSan Tech except for the engineers. But I'm sad he didn't come back after the timeskip TBH.
- It did have some nice music, I'll admit that. But IDK if I want to listen to it again.
- IDK what else to say. It cared too much about the love triangle post-letters reveal, and just. Why? Why would you do that? And you could feel it after episode 9-10, that things were going downhill, but ack, I just wanted to finish what I started TBH.
3.5/10. It had its moments, that that was mostly in the first half, and only in the second, did I care about two characters. The rest can choke.
