Miraculous! Simply The Best!

I don't know what caused me to rewatch s1 of Miraculous Ladybug, but I kind of wanted to see the later seasons, and thought it might be best to watch from the beginning, but I feel like I either watched the show in Korean or French originally? All I really remember is that Plagg has a really deep voice. (Netflix has the French audio, so I could watch that version too, but IDK!)
The bad:
The Good:
The bad:
- The Status Quo is God is... bad. It really hurts the show because these characters then don't get to grow, and I want to see them change! I want to see them make mistakes and make amends and for things to feel inconsistent.
- Unfortunately, since s1 has No True Order (at least I don't think it does) sometimes it just feels... inconsistent. Like it fun on the rewatch to pick up details and see familiar faces, but on the other hand, it's... hard to feel there is a real timeline in this show based on what happens and what people say in each episode.
- Chloe. I hate her. I don't think she's redeemable and the show makes her to be SO hateworthy that it's hard to feel sorry for her when she infuriates everyone, and cause a lot of the problems in the first place, and she refuses to admit that she's wrong. I want Sabrina to ditch her. I want her to be much less spoiled. (And, like, people compare Chloe to Sissi from Code Lyoko, but at least with Code Lyoko, Sissi did messed up things, but she was still likeable! Even from Episode 1, she speaks about her insecurity under duress and you can see glimmers of her being a good person! And maybe she never quite gets there because CL constantly used the reset button to save the day, but I at least felt that Sissi being a selfish spoilt brat that had the capacity to be a good person believeable! Listen, I know the writers wrote her inconsistently, but at least I believed she had both good qualities and bad qualities, whereas I can't see any for Chloe, and the fact she refuses to admit that she messed up.
- Volpina. It was the worst episode, but Lila also follows this pattern. This show hates rich girls and considers them to be vapid, manipulative liars is... disheartening. I have a feeling that the show might be saying 'oh Chloe is bad, but Lila's worse' and that's... not fun to watch, considering so much of it is just girls hating girls.
- I legit forgot that this show had this wierd 'people will chew on things if they're angry'. Marinette chews a book; Chloe chews on her phone. IT'S SO WEIRD.
- The, um. Fetishing of Asian characters, is not great? The fact that these characters are 13 apparent? (13-15?) and wearing skintight clothes. Little bit uncomfortable to watch when sometimes the show will put Chat Noir/Marinette in sorta sexual positions.
- Some of the morals of the show aren't very good. I know what I've got in store for me amounts to 'this show hates Marinette, and wants to apologize constantly', and I just. God. Marinette's the best character, but she's easily the most humiliated character on this show. But jeez, sometimes I wish other people learn lessons, or at least: lessons that stuck, rather than forcing Marinette to be in the wrong.
- I mean the show even had Sabrina say that Marinette is as bad as Chloe. Which, um. What? I pity Sabrina, but JFC, Marinette makes one mistake, and she's deemed that terrible? Ugh. This show wants to paint Marinette in a bad light, and sometimes it's just. Not even near it.
The Good:
- HAWKMOTH MAKES ME LAUGH. It's just the fact he's waiting in his tower (? I don't know where it is?) and the speed at which his window curtains will open and close happen sometimes within a minute of each other, because he's constantly waiting for the opportunity to 'evilize' someone.
- Marinette and Adrien are cute. The love square is cute! For a season one, the lack of progess is fine, since it's kind of... Status Quo-y, and it's the foundation, but I want later seasons to have growth. And like? We do see Marinette develop and grow and talk to Adrien with more confidence over the course of the show, but with Adrien... not so much.
- Sidenote: I really feel that maybe this show should critique Adrien and Marinette's real selves/desire. If Cat Noir hits on Ladybug constantly, but she's often shutting him down, then I wish that Cat Noir would change his approach. Like I know Ladybug and Cat Noir adore each other, and that's what makes the Love Square interesting! But at the same time, it's just... some things don't work, and they have to realize that they have to change. (Marinette needs to be as confident as she is as Ladybug, but what draws her to Adrian isn't his flirtiness, it's his gentleness. On the otherhand, Marinette can equally be bad when she's possessive of Adrien, every now and then,)
- I love her classmates! They're a cute bunch! It would be nice to know more about them! I like that the characters often recur in other episodes. (Nathaniel might be my fave? He's super cute!)
- I actually really like Nino and Alya! I think I was a little puzzled by Nino's skater/surfer voice, but I think it suits the character. And Alya's nice! I like that she's supportive! She's a terrible journalist, but I also think age can excuse that to some degree. I am a little sad that I didn't get to see much Nino/Alya dating, but it's fine! Maybe in s2?
- Kinda love Jagged Stone. He's an obvious Mick Jagger homage, but he's fab all the same.
