Actually not a reread! There's a couple of DWJ books I haven't read, but all of them so far are so delightful.
- Super adored the fact that this was about a geneticist wizard, who loved creating chimeras, basically! and also his family!
- I kind of love that everyone thinks he's hopeless, and he is, except he isn't, and he tries to make the best of it, but also gets fed up of being treated this way.
- Oh my god, I hated Querida. I actually sort of like her now, but initially? Her being so dismissive of Derk, trying to steal on of his griffin children away from him, was kind of infuriating? But then she was like: OH, I messed up, and I kind of liked her for that? Even if she did try to make Mara end the marriage between them. So I liked that she realized that her thoughtlessness had repercussions.
- Honestly got charmed by both love stories. I wasn't, like, that invested in either of them. But I did think Suki/Reville ended up unexpectedly cute? And Shona/Geoffrey was sweet. Which, in a way, is typical DWJ!
- The loss of Kit was gutting. Like. Even though I found out he wasn't dead, the fact that Derk and Calette mourning him was very gutting.
- It's a really good take on tourism? I know that Derk was a pretty great parody of Dark Lords, but I also just really liked the scathing critique of how negative tourism can be as well.
- Super cute family. Just. Yeah. I really enjoyed the fact that even if some didn't always get on, they did feel very much like a proper family.
- Loved the politics, and how they dragged Derk into it. And then he got knocked out!
- Special love goes to Scales, who -- of course -- got attached to everyone, despite getting off on the wrong foot, and turns out to be the king of the dragons.
I'll read the sequel next week, I don't really want to wait a month to read it, so I'm just going to prioritize that for next week.
