I think I prefer Dark Lord of Derkholm overall, but this is such a comforting read all the same? It's so cute???
- Knowing a bit of DWJ's backstory and how she was a student of JRR Tolkien makes Corkoran a lot of sense. But it's also: an interesting look about terrible lecturers, and how his driving passion about moon and him kind of being a terrible person was kind of hilarious? Especially with him judging the essays.
- I loved Elda's unrequited crush on him, and how no one mocks her for it, and she gets over him, but still. It was nice how that subplot was handled.
- Such a cute university feel to it! Like, I could definitely sort of relate to everyone having different passions, but bonding and clicking and liking each other so quickly, and still sort of having a bit of falling out, but also being so protective over each other.
- Honestly, most of the love stories worked on me here. It's just the way DWJ writes, I think, I just get swept away in it.
- Really liked the detail that assassins came in sevens. It's so random, but fun.
- Loved seeing Derk's family reappear throughout the book, ofc this is Elda's book, but whenever her family appeared, I loved it!
- I liked that the problems of the previous book isn't resolved completely, like Querida still has to work through the mess made from the tourism, and even if the reparations aren't quite there, they're definitely on their way!
- Really adored the friendship group. I know I basically said so earlier, but I think it bears repeating all the same!
- Flury was sweet! I'm a bit sad that Elda disliked his meekness, when it's actually a pretty endearing trait to me personally, but oh well. That line of him pining over Elda was very pretty and I liked it a lot. (I think. Because Flury is a griffin, and Elda is a griffin, the potential teacher/student issue does not feel as... icky? IMO? but certainly, I can see it being an issue, and I'm kind of glad it was only really implied on Flury's side, although I could definitely see Elda returning those feelings once Flury acted more certain; though I'd still kind of want them to get together post-graduation, TBH.)
Super cute, and definitely will look forward to rereading. Next up, maybe Axiom's End?
