- Definitely one of the best canon ships I've seen in a while? I loved Koizumi Risa's flip-floppy tendency, and Otani Atsushi's short-sighted temper tantrums. Just. I love the obliviousness and obstinacy and miscommunication, and they were just very cute and darling. I especially loved Koizumi bursting into tears a lot, and Otani struggling to say the softer/lovey-dovey stuff, because he finds it embarrassing and can't quite spit it out. But they do overcome it, and become adorable together.
- I'm docking a point just because I'm not entirely happy with how they treat Seiko? Like, on the whole, I definitely think it's a really positive portrayal of a trans woman -- she's nice and likeable and it doesn't really feel intentionally transphobic? She's not a punchline. And I think -- because this was written in 2001 - 2006, but there's a couple of times when they refer to her as 'he', although I don't know if the misgendering is just a translation issue? Also, and IDK how excuseable/understandable this is -- but, they are kids? and like. I was in my early twenties when I found out about trans stuff and what the correct etiquette was, but -- I don't mind *some* missteps, maybe because there are times when Seiko corrects people when they deadname her, and there were just -- there are times people don't know how to talk about this stuff properly/how to properly talk about it, and Seiko was fine with it?
- Alright this is another thing I don't really know how true it is. How transphobic is it to be like 'I don't want to date you because you were assigned male at birth', when. Seiko didn't offer that information up either? I just. I understand it's dodgy? Maybe both ways? But at the same time, IDK, it was almost a given in this manga when Seiko was discovered to be trans, the person she was interested in immediately lost interest in her.
- Umiboshi seems like a cute band and I'm glad that Otani and Koizumi often got to go to their concerts.
- I kind of loved the obstacles of Mimi, Risa's grandfather (and his helpers, TBH), and Meito. I know Meito was only teasing and only insinuated it to get a response out of Otani, but I still found Risa's crush on him cute.
- I loved Otani being a pro at basketball and was very cute and good at the sport. Also that he wanted to be a teacher, and tried hard to study and work hardelr cute and I'm glad they got married.
- Loved the funny faces Koizumi was given. Absolutely made me laugh every time her face went from normal looking, to very, very not normal looking.
- I loved a lot that Otani forgot it was Koizumi's birthday, and how it was only happenstance that he was with her on his birthday. He more than makes up for it, but it's still very hilarious to see his and everyone's reactions to how he didn't know that.
- I loved the bonus four chapters in this? The prequel where Koizumi and Otani didn't know each other, but we get to learn how they became fans of Umeboshi, and actually had a chance encounter at their first concert? And they realized this? Very very sweet.
9/10, because it was an absolute delight. I cannot wait to watch the anime!
