Do you believe in magic?
- Oh man I adored this manhwa! I loved it so much! I only read it because I discovered by happenstance that there's going to be a live action adaptation, and then I thought, hey, why not give a read now, so that whenever the adaptation comes out -- at some point this year? -- I'll have fuzzy memories of it?
- There were really only three main characters in this manhwa. I mean, there were other side characters, but it was mostly about those three. Yoon Ah-ee, Eul Lee and Na Il-Deung. The cynic, the immature, the elitist. All of them, so terribly, terribly lonely.
- It almost feels Peter Pan like, because Eul Lee, 30 years old, appears to refuse to grow up. He adores the magic of a magician, and became a really good one! A lot of times it felt like he genuinely performed magic tricks, and it was hard to see what was going on behind the curtain, so to speak. And that's where Yoon Ah-ee comes in, because she once loved magic, but then grew disillusioned as her family became full of debt and she tried to bury herself in studying in order to hopefully become a breadwinner. And then you have Na Il-Deung, a little spoitl, seemingly content with the path he's on, but at the same time, he's so empty and hollow inside, and meeting both Eul Lee and Yoon Ah-ee allow him to break free and decide to forge a path that he really wants.
- Interestingly, as a style choice, it was cool to see that Na Il-Deung was deliberately drawn wierdly -- as were his parents -- and then as he became more individual and want he wanted to be -- he then began to be drawn normally, and as attractively! Like, it was so confusing to have people describe him as handsome when... he did not look it! But then, as he became drawn as a normal person, and that was what other character saw him as, then yeah, I understand completely why people thought him attractive.
- I was so afraid that Yoon Ah-ee, 15, was going to end up with Eul Lee. 30, I don't necessarily mind the unrequited crush, which, yeah, I definitely got from Yoon Ah-ee towards Eul Lee, but I'm so glad it never ever felt reciprocal. They were kindred spirits, and certainly friends, but nothing more than that.
- That being said, the first time Eul Lee brought colour to Yoon Ah-ee's world, and the black and white backgrounds become full of colour? Absolutely gorgeous. The artist did some truly beautiful illustrations to further increase the fairy tale element for this story.
- I'm glad that Yoon Ah-ee and Na Il-Deung didn't really end up together. I mean, initially Na Il-Deung is just an awful jerk, then he's a jerk with a sympathetic backstory, then he becomes a nice person, and that development was wonderful. I mean, I feel like the epilogue implies that these two hook up, which: yeah, I'm completely for. They both became better, believing in their dreams, and I just. I like them dating, in the future that they both now live in. But oh man, it did make me laugh a little bit when Na Il-Deung first asks Yoon Ah-ee out, and she thinks about it, and then rejects it, and he takes her rejection like a champ, very gracefully, but the second she's out the picture, Na Il-Deung is seething.
- I loved the mystery of Eul Lee TBH! And how slowly the layers of his past become unveiled. I loved his friendship with the parrot, and his former school friend. I think it's fitting that he disappears, but oh, I would have liked Eul Lee to meet with Yoon Ah-ee and Na Il-Deung.
- It was just a very thoughtful piece, and I'm extremely curious to know how the adaptation will capture that magic.
10/10. Definitely want to read again sometime.
