I have been trying to watch this movie for at least a month, but due to circumstances, was not able to! Finally! (between this movie and Onward), I got to watch it! As always SUPER CUTE.
Like I love Jane Austen. It's not my fave (because Northanger Abbey is easily the best), but it's a close second! (I keep wanting to compare it to the mini series with Romola Garai, but it's mostly solid an adaptation. Though Emma Approved is also rad, whereas Clueless is dreadful, to me.)
- Bill Nighy is super great! I just love him so much! His drollness and hyperchondriac moments were fantastic.
- Emma was also great! I loved that this one made her VERY bitchy (Emma is such a bitch, but that's why she's so fun); though the downside of this meant that at least in this version, I did not understand why she was friends with Harriet. Usually there's a -- well, she fawns over Harriet's eyes in the book, and in the other two, she's a very affectionate mentor to her chosen mentee vibe? IDK. I think that's sort of what I get: Emma takes a liking to Harriet, and decides that she wants what's best for Harriet, whether she likes it or not, and I just didn't get that sense of attachment from this version? It did appear in the latter half of the movie, but in the beginning, I didn't really feel like they were friends.
- Mr Knightley was fantastic! Listen, I'm sure they've cast a younger actor (I'm sure Knightley is meant to be 38 to Emma's 22), and honestly, I think in this modern era it's best to make them much younger/cast younger actors and don't make much of a fuss about the actual age in text. HIS PINING AND GREEN EYED JEALOUSY. The actor delivered some fantastic death glares!
- Also they had a SUPER CHARGED romantic dance! They SO wanted to kiss during that part!
- WHAT A FANTASTIC MR ELTON THEY CAST! I couldn't believe this was the same guy who played Marius in the BBC Les Miserables! HE WAS SO HILARIOUS. BOMBASTIC. I definitely think he was my favourite version of that character ever.
- Miranda Hart as Miss Bates was so good! I don't know how other people managed to keep a straight face (though some were definitely bored!) when she rambled on and on. She was lovely.
Other things:
- I don't remember Emma being instantly regretful when she openly insults Miss Bates during that picnic???
- Were Emma's sister and Mr Knightley's brother always frazzled or was it because having two children made their nerves more frazzled?? I loved that Emma's sister and Mr Woodhouse were of similar temperment, and both at the mention of snow were like: I HAVE TO GO. I HAVE TO GET OUT NOW.
- Rupert Graves!!!! how lovely to see him again!!!!
- I love that Emma has kind of always wanted Mr Knightley's attention? Here there were several moments where she clearly wanted Mr Knightley to notice her. xD
- I do quite enjoy Frank Churchill, but I think they may have sidelined the Frank/Jane more than usual? He's always kinda cruel, but this felt... IDK. More malicious than usual?
- Oh they definitely sidelined Robert Martin, but his actor was SO CUTE, and I liked the little Harriet/Robert interactions we got. (The conversation where Harriet said he went to get walnuts for her was adorable.)
- Harriet was fine. I liked that she was a clumsy goof, but I think I've seen better Harriets TBH?
- I liked the Winter/Spring/Summer/Fall moment.
I kinda want to rewatch Emma Approved and the BBC miniseries now.
