- It's about Honoo Moyoru, university student who dreams of being the best mangaka, but is also deeply aware that he's terrible, yet still has the ego to believe he's better than everyone else. It's set in the eighties, and some of his fellow peers are future highly successful anime people. The one I knew was Anno Hideki, but to find out that also the founder of Studio Gainax, and one of the head directors as well was a surprise!
- Anyway, Honoo absolutely hates that trio, but especially Anno the most.
- Apparently a lot of the events actually happened, since this is an adaptation of the manga, and the mangaka actually worked alongside them. Incredible, TBH!
- Very hilarious, but also inspiring, because there's a lot of moments where Honoo is relatable through his complaining and esteem which alternates between being very high and extremely low, and lazy.
- I loved very much how cool yet weird Anno was. I didn't know he was such an Ultraman and Gundam fan, but since he is the Evangelion guy, it absolutely tracks. Although I kind of like that he was sort of controversial within the university himself? Some people saw him as a meal ticket, others genuinely liked him, and others disliked him as well.
- I kinda like that Honoo Moyoru doesn't get with anyone. IDK, it's just nice that he sort of tries, but also fails, but that doesn't really bother him that much.
- Also: Honoo's actor really went all in on the exaggerated expressions, and I'm so glad he was that dedicated, that committed. Good for him!
- It's extremely cute that some of the original people featured as minor characters, and then during the credits sequence, they reveal that it's the actual person from back then. It's just delightful.
9.5/10. I had an absolute blast watching this. I really want to read the manga, but it seems hard to find, unfortunately.
