Book 1 of 2022, and I do not like it. It’s okay, just not as fun as I thought it was going to be.
The romance was awful, I’m sorry but Marie was so suspicious that I just couldn’t buy into the romance and with the reveal that she’s actually 300ish even though she considers herself permanently 17 is not great. It’s not a good excuse for Twilight, just because this is a sapphic romance doesn’t make it acceptable either.
Briseis was a likeable protagonist. She was nice enough, and I liked her poison ivy esque powers. Her family was sweet.
TBH, I feel like I have to reread the book with Karter’s future actions in mind, because I didn’t peg him as suspicious because I was too suspicious about Marie. But even then, it seemed like he was acting in fear of his mother, and tried to help Briseis against his better judgment. He just seemed like a friend that Briseis needed until the plot required him to be working for the bad guy. But again, I did have blinders on and didn’t assume he was up to something like Marie was.
I wanted to like the incorporation of Greek myth and gods a lot more than I actually did. Or the mystery of the house. Secret Garden this was not.
Some of the pop culture references actively bugged me. Not all of them, but some.
I found the first two thirds alright but that last third rushed through everything so fast and tried to set up a sequel that it just felt like a shame, TBH. I kind of want to get the sequel to know how it ends, but I also don’t know how optimistic I feel for it.

I guess it’s a 3/5.
I know I am going to have a bad string of books to begin with but the quicker I read them , the sooner I can get rid of them.
