It's an improvement, I'll admit that. Not by much, but. It's better.

- These characters are still so bland. I'm just going to have to accept that, but it's hard! God, I want this book series to be a cartoon, because at least then, I might get more fun out of these cardboard archetypes!

- I was right three for three on the ships. I don't think it was ever particularly subtle about it. I thought Auri/Kai was nicely developed; though I hated the chapters when they alternated narrators within the chapter. I'd rather they start new chapters if that's the case. I don't know why I'm so stingy about it, but I feel like in this case, the change is jarring. Fin/Scarlett did happen, though I was surprised that it only really happened at the end? So I'm... not really convinced that Scarlett is into Fin that much? Like, she kissed him because she thought she was going to die, rather than, this is the last chance she'll ever have, and she's repressing her feelings for him. (It's not like that.) Like they have some nice friendship development, and Fin's obviousness is pretty cute, BUT, I'm struggling to see the reciprocity. Again, I did not care for Tyler/Cat, not really. I enjoy the angst because Cat is part of a brainwashed hivemind, but I do not care about them for them. I'm mildly curious to see if Zila will get a girlfriend, although I feel like she's kind of too emotionally inept to really be in the proper headspace for one, even by book three.

- Also, I wonder if I just skim read the first book, but I did not get the feeling that Cat and Ty slept together? Kissed, sure. I guess, that drunken night was supposed to imply that, but I really just thought they meant drunken makeout!

- Speaking of Zila, thank goodness the authors made her chapters more descriptive instead of a single sentence. I guess I enjoyed Zila trying to be genuinely funny, instead of... IDK, obliviously funny? But she has a long way to go if they want to make that work.

- Needless to say, I loved the Ra'haam who changed Cat's irises, and she is a voice in a legion, and because of that, the Ra'haam love Ty too. I am so sad that the Ra'haam didn't get much to do, or even feature a chapter to their POV, but I suppose I can accept Tyler angst when he's being tortured by Cat. Yay!

- The funniest part of the book, by far, was Kal saying that his father was dead. To him. As in, from a certain point of view, I'm not lying. I get why all the characters turn against him at that point, but man, irrational much? He can't choose his dad -- he effectively disowned him! -- at no point if he said 'btw, my dad killed your dad', and expect that the group was going to be okay with that. Of course I'm sure the group will realize that he didn't betray them, much less is he at fault, because children cannot choose their fathers, nor should they really inherit their father's sins, but they've been through a stressful time, and it makes sense why they reject him at that time.

- Then again, he genuinely might be dead. Which I think would be interesting if it stuck. It's kind of hard to say, and I have a feeling he won't be.

- Don't really care much for Kal's sister. Or their dad. Or Scar and Ty's dad. Will I find out much about the twin's mother? I don't think so, but we'll see.

In conclusion: I still want the plants to take over the universe.
