Can I just say, that if a book begins by introducing the author's bio with 'HE DOES NOT BELIEVE IN HAPPY ENDINGS' then WHAT, good sir, is the POINT?

(Not to say that books can't end unhappily, cynically, bittersweetly or even esoteric, but I mean, COME ON. Do not use that as my first impression of the author FFS.)

Anyway, did not care much for this book. Ugh, I just want a book to love, why am I so picky.

So. Thoughts:

- Narration did not suit me in the slightest. Making footnotes just for quick potshots/comic humour just came across as awful and trying to hard for levity. Did not care for the footnotes much, especially when it became clear that most of the time they didn't even really add anything to the story either. It did build the world up, and I liked that, but most of the time they were just for jokes, which makes me sad. I got used to it by the end, but I'm still mostly ambivalent TBH. The author was a bit too in love with his metaphors, trying to extend them until they became nonsense.

- The book begins with a contrast of our protag Mia having sex and murdering someone, which was not a good start to the book, I have to tell you. Kind of didn't see the need for it. Didn't like Mia especially, I wanted to, but I didn't find her particularly engaging.

- I liked Mr Kindly the cat who siphoned emotions off her, but I cannot say I particularly cared for either of them. I also liked Tric, but that was about it. And Aelius.

- Maps looked neat though.

- I did think the book picked up when Assassin School started, and the murder mysteries happened. Hush was interesting, but I didn't particularly care for Ash or Jess.

- The bookworms, monsters of the library, were super neat and mysterious. That kind of explains why I liked the librarian Aelius, TBH.

- I did like that there was no moon, and Mia going 'what the hell is a moon???' because this is a world with three suns and daylight all the time, and I'm sure that the question will be answered in future books, but alas!.
I'm not getting the sequel because I just didn't find it interesting enough to continue. I am kind of curious with there being an adaptation though? I'll try to be on the look out for it, at least?
