Honestly? I think it's the best out of the three. AHR annoys me because I dislike the endgame ship, SE, I warmed to in part because it was a reread, OOFF, I loved because I think it hit a bit closer to home, and I liked that a lot.
- I will say, that I got the completely wrong idea about the endgame ships in this? I know the manga starts off at teasing Akari/Rio and Yuna/Kazuomi, and then switches into Akari/Kazuomi and Yuna/Rio, but for some reason I totally thought the manga was going to go back to A/R and Y/K, and was kind of relieved that that wasn't the case at all?
- I will say, that in a way, I'm sad that I didn't get more Y/K interaction, because that felt really lacking, and there was a bit more of A/R, because they were stepsiblings, but I'm still a bit -- I wish there had been more friendship moments, all the same.
- So, okay, the true heart of the story is between Yuna and Akari, and it's cool to see how these two grow and bounce off each other, and even get a little insecure with each other because of how different they are, but, it's such a sweet and heartwarming friendship, how these two are good for each other, that I love that they check in with each other often. And, TBH, I'd say the same for Kazuomi and Rio, though lesser, I do think you get to see their friendship grow and change and the perceived love triangle, it was cool to see that it didn't really change their friendship, but Kazuomi didn't want to pursue Akari out of respect of Rio's feelings.
- I mean, one of Io Sakisaka's faults, I think, is just: characters say ILU a tad too persistently? Like, if they say it enough, they'll get through to their love interest, they'll take a chance on them if they just say it one more time-- and I -- I don't like that. I wish they'd move on. But I think. With this work, because the relationship has changed between Y/R and A/K when they say it -- i.e. they were friends first, but then became much closer later on, and understood each other better, I didn't mind it this time around. But, also, like, these two ships were genuinely interested in each other, but a couple of reasons why it didn't go so well the first time around makes much more sense for them to try again? IDK, I just don't think it feels as persistent as it did in her previous two works, TBH.
- Also. I just. I shipped the ships in this one! That makes one hell of a difference, maybe. I am -- extremely lukewarm to the main ship in AHR, but there's a couple of nice b-ships in that manga, and I've become more receptive to ships in Strobe Edge, even though, oh, I would like Ninako/Ando to be canon.
- I think what I liked about this one was how Rio's heart changed. He was put in a really unfortunate situation at the beginning -- falling for someone who then became his stepsister, and trying to get over it, which like? As things go, is better than the couple of previous mangas were someone falls for their stepsibling after their parents get married. And so I liked Rio's growing interest in Yuna, and cautiousness with if it was real or just a transient thing. So the mutual pining worked for me.
- And also: I just found Rio and Yuna super cute? Sure, it's sappy, and innocent, and sweet, but I think I needed that? It was just pure sugar, and I liked those two together, and how they talked to each other and acted around each other. And I liked that Yuna did have her insecurity, and Rio didn't know what to do, but Yuna kind of had to confront that, nonetheless. And it wasn't really an easy fix, but I liked how her parents gave them a little nudge, a bit of wisdom, for them to keep in mind, so you'd know that those two were going to be okay all the same.
- I actually did like the slowburn of Akari and Kazuomi, but I think I liked Akari's consideration a lot, and her conversations with Kazuomi, and her ex. I didn't expect her ex-boyfriend, or her old school friends, to reappear! But they did, and I kind of liked them too! I liked that Akari also became more confident and open with her friends and herself, but at the same time, Kazuomi wanted to be more dependable, and push her into being better. So when he was like 'I think you should dump me if you want to be a translator in the USA', I kind of grew to respect him a lot more.
- I'll say this for Io Sakisaka: I do think she writes interesting backstories! I always tend to like the ex-couples, for most part. (AHR, again, with the main ship, and the teacher/student ship, was not one of these.) But. I like a couple of the ex-couples, and I think the interactions are nice.
- The ending, was maybe, a tad unrealistic, but like? I didn't mind that much? Akari decides to go to the USA, and Kazuomi just so happens to find a university as well in the USA? Hmm. I don't know. It was pushing it a little bit, but it was fine. They deserved their happy ending, and I'm glad things worked out for them.
- I will say it was kind of annoying how the chapters were out of order a couple of times when I read through it, so I constantly had to go to the index to get the correct order, because otherwise chapter 27 would become 32, and it was a little bit pesky.
So, I liked it a lot. It was schmoopy, simple, but very sweet and endearing for me. 9/10, because I really did like it a lot. I'm kinda of curious to watch the live action/anime version? But maybe in half a year or so, so the memories of this manga aren't so fresh.
