SUPER LOVED THIS. Definitely intrigued to read the manga.
- Uh, I found out that the last couple of episodes of s1 were made up, and watching s2, it sure showed! Starting s2, I was very confused because I thought that s1 had already got those story beats -- everyone not dealing that well with the reveal about Rin being Satan's son; and then I was confused at why Yukio's ears returned to regular ears? I tried to tell myself that maybe s2 was somehow set in between a couple of episodes of s1, but uh, you know, I didn't really believe that. That didn't make s1 or s2 less enjoyable or anything, but uh, it was an experience?
- What a lovely cast of characters. I don't think I've taken to a main character so readily in a while! Like!!! I adore Okimura Rin with my whole, whole heart! What a good protagonist, who is kind and grumpy, and resents his brother but loves his brother, and wants more than anything to be loved.
- Yukio as his opposite was delightful, as well. Like the mixture between loving your brother and resenting your brother, like both exist for both these boys, and I like how their insecurities get to them, but also how they overcome it? It's baby steps, but you know these two are always there for each other, nonetheless. I know s1 wasn't really canon, but I do think demon!Yukio was actually pretty cool to look at anyway! But also his moral ambiguity darkening was interesting and I like that.
- GUESS WHO CRIED OVER KURO A LOT! Super cute cat, love that he stayed as Rin's familiar, and in my heart for ever and ever.
- I also adore Rin/Shiemi! It's a wholesome, lovely OTP, and I'm very much drawn to it. I feel like -- Rin fell hard and fast, even if he didn't really realize it, but he's always looking out for her. meanwhile, Shiemi is taking the slow path, partly because of her own social shortcomings, but also because she is careful, careful to fall in love as well? And so I think might confuse love/friendship, so lots of very positive and affectionate interaction she has is very much -- IDK, not quite sure how to differentiate? Somewhat? Like, I do think Shiemi has fallen for Rin as well, but I'd be much more leaning towards the idea that she's oblivious to it, in a way that Rin, who I could say might be dense enough not to realize it, but he'd be aware of his feelings much sooner than she?
- But oh, man, Shiemi talking to Rin in the Kyoto arc was just -- I love them. I love these two and how they talk to each other and how they continue to grow.
- Also loved Bon! Bon, who took me by surprise by looking like a delinquent, but also, smartest and hardworking student! I love that he kind of is the same character as Rin, but they're kind of opposites too? Also love his consistent grumpiness at Rin's lone wolf schtick when Bon wants to be a team! It's just a bit cute!
- And his friends are super cute too! Koneko and Shima are rad.
- I also loved Fujimoto Shiro? Like. He made some bad parenting calls, but at the same time, you can see how well-intentioned he was, and how he thought he was making the right calls at the time. Also: his backstory with Kuro was good! But when you see glimpses of him being a parent to Rin and Yukio, oh, my heart breaks. He really did try his best.
- I do not know what to think about Johann Faust/Mephisto??? Like. He's great, I like him, but what is his plan??? He clearly has one and I'm dying to know what he's setting Rin up for? Or maybe he doesn't and just wants to test humanity with wagers??? IDK, but he and his brother Anaimon are rad, and I love them shapeshifting a lot!
- I liked Izumo and her stubbornness. Didn't love her for treating Shiemi like a slave, but I'm really happy with how that relationship is evening out, with them being kind of pillars of inspiration towards each other. I feel like it's a pretty neat friendship, but I kind of feel like Izumo/Paku is more romantic than Izumo/Shiemi,though.
- They had some really cute filler episodes. I know the birthday one was filler, but FML, I loved it? This class loves everyone so much! Also loved everyone sight seeing in Kyoto! (Because Rin is the best!)
- I know the last couple of episodes of s1 weren't really that... consistent with the start of s1, and how Satan was portrayed, but I... I kind of liked it? It makes me laugh a little with Satan being a totally awful person in s1 who didn't care one bit about Rin (or Yukio), to the final episodes being like: I fell deeply in love with your mother, I am remaking the world for you. Nice try! Appreciate the effort, but clearly, not the intended plan! (But also: mainly: demon!Yukio!!!)
- The movie had nothing to do with the anime, really. It took place whenever. But because I loved the characters, their interaction, I was just really happy to see more of them! Hanging it, having fun, and so I just had a blast watching it, TBH.
So: 10/10. Adored. Would watch again.
