SUPER LOVED IT.
- I will admit, I cannot remember the first two episodes because I thought they were super boring, but something about the third episode got me invested and engaged in Tagon, and in turn, about everybody else, that I regret zoning out the first two episode.
- But, jeez, it was so good. High fantasy? Weird and wonderful lore that isn't 100% explained, but clearly promises more worldbuilding about the clans and characters.
- So, okay, Tagon was my in, and I just -- I loved his need for approval, to be liked, and part of that made him soft. And he had to discard that softness in order to be a king. So his whole journey was fascinating to me. And I loved his love stroy with Taealha, because you could tell that they loved each other deeply, even when their conspired against each other, and turned against each other. I just find their own individual agendas, but also their knowledge of each other: knowing the best and worst of each other, did not affect their love for each other in the slightest. I loved his relationship with his brothers, and his father, and his son. I've never seen this actor before, but holy shit, he was so good and driven and always a compelling performance.
- Taealha was also great! Her relationship with her father, as horrible and complicated as it was, was fascinating.
- I also loved whatever weird thing was going on with Saya, her, sort of son? She raised Saya, much more than Tagon did, who didn't even know his name? Like, I just. They're petty and plotty and seeing this trio interact was fantastic always.
- SAYA WAS GREAT. Listen, I've genuinely never seen his actor before, but based off his dual performance of Saya, the chaotic, deceitful, hungering, and the sweet and hopeful and kind hearted Eun-Seom, he is stellar. I am gutted that these two did not meet this season, but hey, season 2!!!! SEASON 2. Here's the thing, though. it's hard to blame Saya for turning out that way, based on the way he was brought up: he had to become spiteful and prickly to survive, though he longs for freedom, and being open about being an Igutu, it makes a lot of sense why he's so underhanded, because he's lived so much of his life in the shadows.
- Also, just. His crush on Tanya, twisted as it might be, is probably the only sincere things about him, and part of me really loves how messed up that ship is? Like, he dreamed for her, because he was seeing through Eun-Seom's eyes, his twin, and ofc because they're identical, when Tanya looks at Saya, all she sees is the reminder that he's not Eun-Seom. Like, I do think he genuinely loves Tagon, because he's his father, but at the same time -- he does consider him too soft, and though Taealha raised Saya, those two do not like each other. But they will work together, because a lot of the time, they do have a shared goal. But: he does love chaos.
- Shoutout to Eun-Seom, who I was sad was minimal in the middle section, but I loved him for his dopeyness and kindness in the beginning and end part. He's still oblivious to SO MUCH OF WHAT'S GOING ON, but I also really just enjoyed him for staying kind, believing in others when they did not believe in themselves, and just. I want good things to happen with him.
- Super loved Tanya and her rise to power. Honestly, her arc, of becoming mother of the tribe, of casting spells, and a dance passed through generations and having the heritage of the true prophet -- to become powerful to save her tribe, and know that at some point, she may be powerless again as her purpose may have a limit: all of it was riveting. AND HER CURSE. Like, I did not like this actress in Fight For My Way, but Tanya was fantastic in this.
- I am so curious to know how these three are going to end the world somehow. If it's going to be a twist, and rather: save the world instead. How the hell is it going to come together, when Saya and Eun-seom have not met, and Saya probably will hate Eun-seom's guts because in a way: everything Saya wants, Eun-seom has. How are they going to act with each other!!!! I want that so badly!!!!
- Also, look, as much as I do ship Tanya/Saya, part of me does love Tanya/Eun-Seom, because of how central the other person was in their minds, even when they were separated for most part of the show.
- I also loved the political stuff, and the brotherhood that Tagon had. Just. It was so interesting and I loved it a whole lot.
10/10. Would watch again. Definitely have to watch again once s2 happens.
