You know what? Probably would have helped had I read this over the course of three days or so, instead of spacing it out over the course of a month.
- It's not a bad manga in the slightest, but I'd be lying if I said that I could make sense of it initially. It takes about 100 or so chapters for the dots to finally line up, which meant I had to think back and remember what happened before, and re-contextualize what I know now with what happened then.
- So I think I reread is necessary to fully grasp the flashbacks with the present day, and to see how much it intertwines. I mean, I like that it's complicated and thought out, but a weakness is that I think it relied to heavily on the flashbacks to explain the then and now, and how that affects the present/future of the story. Also I'm not entirely certain that the flashbacks were well integrated to begin with? I absolutely agree that they were necessary, but I feel like that they were clunky, so when a flashback happened in the real world, I wasn't really sure how they were relevant to the actual story?
- I really loved the main character though. Toki was super cute and sweet, and just a very lovely protagonist all around. I don't think I liked his lovestory though -- I know nothing really happened, but at the same time, I'm pretty sure Kuchiya is an AI, so... it's not a great lovestory? Also, like, maybe not have them interact infrequently, IMO?
- Ultimately, I think it's a story about the friendship between Toki and Kon, even though several times, my head hurt with the plot twists. And I just find it pretty sweet they find new ways to be friends again and again and again.
- Super loved the backstory of Kon and his robot, though. Very very cute, very very sweet.
- I really liked Bonten and his brother. I completely missed the fact that Bonten was savvy with modern day references, but it's really interesting how he tries to help, but can't outright break the rules. Loved his minions though.
- TBH, kind of disappointed with the villain this one? I'm not entirely certain I like grief as a motivator, at least in this case? Especially since that love story seems... kind of iffy? Like Chitose was a teenager when she fell in love with Suou, right? Ugh, this is what I get for reading it sporadically, so the full picture isn't clear to me.
- I'm really hoping that the anime might make things make more sense? I know it cut a lot out -- mainly the RL stuff -- but still.
- I will say that it's kind of bugging me that Toki says closeness is defined by bickering. Like, no? I'm beginning to kind of dislike that. You can be close and not bicker. You can be open with your dislikes and have a mature discussion about it. It's just -- you can have a friendly relationship without needing it to be superficial and shallow. The other thing I'm beginning to tire of is 'if you give up on your friendship, you're trash', because like? Naruto, you should have let Sasuke be, instead of dragging him back to Konoha, when he clearly was done with Konoha, TBH. (Though this also applies to Sakura too NGL.)
Anyway, 8/10. Will definitely reread later, because I want to grasp the entirety of the story, and I definitely don't think I have. But when that day comes, it's a 9/10 for sure.
