Binged this on and off during my mornings. It is cute!
- Basically it's about a family that travels the ocean and search the mysteries of the sea, and the mysterious Lemeria, and their occasional recurring foes.
- I do have a lovehate relationship with the Nektons, though. On the whole, I think they're sweet. I like that Ant is excitable, and loves mistakes/success, and especially his fish Jeffery. On the flipside, there are times I find him too annoying, and mean, and obnoxious. (I'm half-certain he's ADHD/autistic), and while on the whole I do think that's what makes Ant such a good protagonist, there are just... times where he's a bit much, and he's too bratty for me to like him. He's 13, so I get it! But other times, I'm just. Not always a fan. To be fair, you can definitely see the resemblance to Kaiko, the mother, who is awesome: she's a very good and competent marine biologist who is a very capable engineer. But on the other hand, there are times I really don't like her much either.
- On the flipside, though, you do have my favourite Nektons, Will, the dad, who is mostly laidback and pretty easy-going, and also Fontaine, ever the cynic, but a good foil with Ant at times, and has saved the day by herself sometimes. I do like that every Nekton is smart in their own way and contribute to the episode, though Ant being the protag does get the most wins.
- What bugs me about the Nektons, though, is how they hate being out of the loop. Like. If Nereus keeps them out of the loop, and is vague, it's just: it's obviously a test? Figuring the stuff on their own is half the journey? But every time Nereus would be vague, Kaiko especially would be 'oh how DARE you hide this from me', and just. Ugh, I hated it. I hated that Will couldn't bear being thought of possibly in the wrong, even if the investigation team were wrong, Will acted so snotty at merely being thought as bad, that I just. It grated.
- I really like their pirate nemesis, though, the Dark Orca. They're very cute, and I love that Finn and Fontaine have a quasi romance going on -- they're definitely attracted to each other, but so long as Finn remains a pirate, it's never going to happen. Though I do like that Finn is pretty great at being underhanded, and so will help out Fontaine from time to time, even if sometimes he can't go directly against his families wishes. Sometimes I wish that Finn could escape his pirate life, but on the other hand, it's hard to say how he'd survive out of the sea and not being a pirate. Still, the Dark Orca is a mad family that love each other, and it's good that Madeleine likes being a pirate, as does her dad Captain Hammerhead.
- Sometimes I like Devil Daniels. Like, on the whole, he is kind of annoying, and I know he's wrong for sensationalize something out of nothing, but on the other hand, there's a comfort on him being a thorn on the Nekton's side. If nothing else, he'll annoy them, and so I kind of like that.
- Dolos I love because he's a petty, stingy jerk who especially hates Ant. He's bad, and everyone knows it, but ah, he's such fun!
- I kind of grew to like Alpheus. A former chosen one, as assumed by Nereus, until he was too ambitious. Initially I found him kind of annoying, but I sort of liked the concept of someone Ant could have been, perhaps, and Alpheus did recognise that kindred spirit, despite Ant disliking him, and wanting to reach out to him. But I -- I feel like in his final episode, I kind of really liked him, and his relationship with ARIA. I'm sad that he's vowed never to return, because I just. I suddenly started to want to see more of him, but oh well. I think it's a good end to his character arc, even if I'm interested in seeing if he really did learn his lesson and be a better person.
- I didn't really care for Proteus. And he kind of disappeared, which is disappointing. He never really got used much, and him as evil mentor to Alpheus wasn't as interesting as I thought it could be. Hopefully he'll be back, but IDK.
- Professor Fiction is great. I adore him. I'm always happy to see him, tinkering away.
- Kenji is also pretty great? I know he doesn't really do much, but it's nice to see him all the same.
- I wish I liked Jess? I don't really like Ant's crush on her, I feel like Jess/Fontaine is better, TBH, but I also don't think it's helped that Jess has only appeared twice, I think, and mostly it's just: she's too satellite, and I might like Ant/Jess more if it wasn't so boring? I don't think it'll be canon, because it really does feel like Jess likes Ant well enough, but he's just Fontaine's younger brother, for most part.
- Oh, I dislike the children, though, who win competitions to spend time with the Nektons. They just kind of gave me a headache, TBH.
- I loved the Monumentals, though. So cool! I really hope there will be more of them in the future.
- Although I'm really curious to see what s4 will bring, with s3's finale being: Will's parents have been in Lemuria. What happened to them and where are they now?
On the whole, a nice show, and I'm curious to watch more. Hopefully there will be more.
