SUPER CUTE.
- I really liked this one, even if I have some quibbles, but I think they were meant to be critical of them, all the same? Not sure how well that panned out.
- I found it super weird how the staff would all call the mothers by not their name, but 'baby's fetus name mother'. Like I do think the weirdness was the point, almost to reinforce that once you become a mother, you sort of put your own life on hold, because your child matters more? But I definitely think -- and I'm glad -- that Ru Da pushed back on that, and was like *I* matter too. I liked that she consistently challenged the beliefs of the residents and the staff on this. I wish the men actually got to do more, but also, again, maybe that was the point of the show: to show that women, in general are expected to be caretakers, whereas the men are supportive but do other stuff.
- The one part that didn't work for me was probably just. The one staff member who kind of 'spoke' for the babies, and really shamed the main characters for being inattentive. I don't know if it was supposed to be funny? But it definitely felt guilt-tripping and manipulative.
- I know it's a cultural thing. But I do kind of like the idea of fetus names? They're just placeholder names before the parents decide on the official name of their child. Although part of me really thought -- though again, could be a UK/USA thing -- that you decide on the name pre-childbirth, but sometimes I guess you do think 'I'll think of a name after childbirth'. It's kind of cute though that they're not 'actual names' -- I mean, the site I watched this on, didn't let me know that Ddal-pul meant Glue Stick until the penultimate episode, I think, but it's. Kind of cute?
- I really liked the different kind of mothers were in this? We had the seemingly perfect mothers -- because they've done it before. The mature but inexperienced mother -- our main protagonist -- because she was a workaholic and didn't expect to be pregnant, but improved a lot. And the grieving mother, who I didn't expect at all, but I thought was actually really well done and a tragic tale as well. And the indepent single mother who rejects a marriage proposal, because she wasn't sure she'd like that.
- The tragic mother definitely caught me offguard. I'd completely forgotten there was something shifty happening in earlier episodes, but when the penultimate episode brought everything back, I was like 'oh! yeah! that happened! oh no!', and I just. Was impressed by how sad it was, but also how well it tied together. And it was scary, and sad, and I like that Sprout's mother, doesn't -- it's not a full recovery, but she's beginning to recover from her child's death, and heal. It's a start.
- And I liked that all were kind of clueless and had some prejudices that were challenged, and they took time to figure out what was right for them. So ultimately, it was an uplifting story.
- I liked how realistic it felt! I'm sure some things were fudged a bit, but on the whole, it definitely felt true to life -- and made me reconsider my own choices a little bit. I'm not a mother, but. Certainly it had things that I'd never really thought about before.
- Also what cute couples! I really liked Oh Hyun-Jin and Kim Do-Yoon! Such a sweet and supportive couple, who really loved each other, even if Oh Hyun-Jin lost her temper a lot, and Do-Yoon was a lil ditzy, but sweet. I liked how both had insecurities, misread each other a bit, but also: communicated to each other at the end of the episode, their worries. Very wholesome.
- I'm surprised by how much I liked Jo Eun-Jung! Originally, I definitely disliked her, but then I came to care for her -- although I do think it helped that other mothers found her a bit much, even if they knew she was a fount of wisdom. It was nice that in some aspects she clueless too! Anyway, I half expected her to have an affair with the delivery man, because the show was like, look, she is unhappy in marriage, her husband is inattentive in trying to pursue his fame, her kids are nightmares -- and the deliveryman is... kinda cute, kind of there, seeing her when she's desperate and doesn't really judge her and tries to help out, and she's not... great at communicating either, because she put her children's/husband's needs and wants before herself. Even though I don't like affairs, genuinely! But part of me kind of wanted to see it play out, but the fact that it became -- a friendship of sorts, not really romantic at all, and they helped each other become people again and make sure that their needs/dreams are also considered, and it ended with her visiting the recital and watching him play piano, was very sweet. But I liked that Eun-Jung's husband realized that maybe he'd been hasty with his pursuit to fame, definitely inconsiderate, so he did apologize for his behaviour, but I also liked that he asked her to speak about her troubles too! That's what makes a good marriage! So both had been a bit self-absorbed, and -- they can't read each other's minds, but because both are willing to be more open -- I'm kind of hopeful for their marriage? I want it to work out? Which is something I definitely didn't expect from the first episode.
- The friendships were great. And I liked how it took a while for them to form, some quicker than others, some more artificial originally. But still really sweet that they have a group chat to talk to each other after the left the centre, so their woes and fears can be sympathized with, and given wisdom/advice now that they have to raise their child by themselves.
- My favourite episode was probably the second episode, just because it was so great to see Do-Yoon have a father friend, who is experienced and helps him out, and they basically have a very cute romcom episode, and sadly, his bestie has to leave by the end of the episode. But they'll try to stay in contact -- oh no! the business card has been swept away to the wind! And then Do-Yoon sees him again on the front cover of a magazine, and quietly wishes that he's happy, wherever he was. I liked that he returned for an episode though! And Do-Yoon sort of got to repeat that pattern, this time being more experienced in the birthcare center with a more inexperienced father, because that was cute as heck!
Honestly, if they did a sequel, following these mothers raising their children in a daycare center, I would love it.
9/10, because it was delightful.
