One of these days, I'll be given a book, and I'll like it. This is not one of these times.
- Listen, I will say that I liked Ampersand. He was very cool.
- The biggest thing that ticked me off about this book was that Nils Ortega was never on page? I'm sorry, but reading the letters/articles he wrote was not the same. I want description! I want to see him be narcissistic with speech and dialogue and mannerisms, rather than, everybody talking about him.
- I don't know how much I care about 'first contact' stories? Mars Attacks, was great. Arrival was interesting, but I'd forget about it in a day, TBH.
- I did like that Ampersand and Obelus were like. Lovers.
- Real sad there wasn't much Ampersand/Obelus though. Like, if they really wanted the Megatron/Starscream ship, then you gotta go hardcore. Give me those exes vibes!!!! I don't especially feel like Megatron/Starscream have exes vibes, like, Megatron/Optimus, but. I still want to feel something.
- IDK how I feel about Cora? She's decent, I guess, and I did like her growing feelings for Ampersand, and the manipulations Ampersand did to make her more complicit to him, and that made her angry, but, no real attachment? Maybe she just felt more passive without much agency, so I was happy to follow her story, but I didn't especially care for her because I figured she'd be fine.
- Did super like Ampersand calling her 'dear one', and it was kindness that bonded them and now they're kind of in love? Here's the thing: I don't think the romance was earned, but I think I was in a mood where that particular brand of sweetness, and the isolation and the intimacy worked a bit, but I'm not entirely convinced on how deserved it was?I'm glad they don't actually say that they're in love, but they're kind of on their way there, even if they don't know if the other can truly understand them properly.
- But no actual monster fucking? Really?
- However, it was an abduction romance, and... IDK. I was half wanting them to be platonic, too. IDK!
- I feel like I missed out on a lot of Transformers references? Apparently Ampersand/Obelus were Megatraon/Starscream? I could definitely see Cora being Alexis, though, even if I have very little recollection of that series.
I was going to throw this book away, but there's going to be a sequel, and I'm. Not immune to Ampersand being a liar who lies about stuff, even when he does care, and tries to get around stuff by omission.
