satalasers: (Saga; pensive)

I think, due to my choice in animes that I probably wouldn't have liked this one had I not been watching some pretty terrible animes, TBH.

- I will say that one thing I unambiguously loved was the opening and just how fun and lively it was to listen to. The rest kind of sucked.

- As a comedy device, people forcing other people to get drunk and act kind of depraved is gross. If you feel kind of apathetic to the characters, partly because you hate them, it can be funny, and I don't deny -- this is part of the reason I like Yondesamasu yo, Azazel-san. and Sunabouzo. They are awful people doing awful things to each other, and that can be funny. This felt cruel, TBH?

- I mean, I can enjoy *some* frat bro hi jinks! There were a couple of moments that I enjoyed, despite that the grossness of it. But it kind of felt like the main character didn't want to drink, but got forced into it anyway, and then sort of takes it out on other people, and IDK.

- I actually did enjoy the legitimate diving bits, and the main character gradually learning to like diving? Even if he can't swim, and he and his best friend genuinely think it's cool.

- I wish it wasn't so incestuous though? I'm never going to like incest. The biggest offender was probably, Nanaka/Chisa, since they're sisters, and even if it's onesided, it's gross. Still gross is Iori/Nanaka or Iori/Chisa, because they're cousins, and it's just. It's really weird. Chisa, again and again, would like to have a decent relationship with Iori, and that's nice! When they have genuinely nice moments and a good connection because of their childhood memories, it's nice watching those two interact. HOWEVER, Iori often mucks things up, causing Chisa to rightfully get mad at him, repeatedly, and like? What is the point. Like, it feels like neither Iori or Chisa want to be together -- thank goodness -- but the anime still sort of presents it as if there's a chance? Which is deeply strange, and hard to explain. Apparently in the manga, Iori is adopted, but I have to say, if a brother is adopted, you still consider them a brother, so if a cousin is adopted, you still consider them your cousin, and not, say, a romantic prospect.

- Chisa was mostly great because she was pretty level headed and refuses to play along.

- Like, I will say this about the fanservice. They kind of know when people go too far? There's a weird limit on how behaviour is exercised, even if most of the characters have a rotten personality. They'll help each other out if they're in need of money. I like that they help out Aida because they think that she needs help, and so that's exactly what they do. They can be surprisingly nice! They're just kind of idiots and spiteful about how they go about things.

- Like, if they didn't spend so much time drinking, they could buy their equipment a lot sooner. But that's part of the comedy too.

- It's so nice to meet a bisexual character! Azusa was great because she's a gadfly, and she likes teasing people, but she fits in with the gang just as much. I just thought it's a pretty nice portrayal of a character.

7/10. Definitely not for everyone, but I will say that I found it more enjoyable than Shoukugeki no Soma.
