I don't know what to make of this season! It's good! BoJack is finally on the healing path, genuinely trying to make amends/becoming a healthy person/breaking the cycle. But I think I missed the dark self-destructiveness and I think, had I bingewatched Bojack Horseman destroy his life and finally say 'maybe I should change' and actively work towards that, I would have probably had enjoyed it, because the show is a definite breather in that sense? But since I just watched the season alone, I thought 'kind of miss the sabotaging element to it', which validly, in the previous season, the show condemns!
- BUT THE NEXT HALF OF THE SEASON IS GOING TO FULFUL THE MESSY FALLOUTS! SO YAY...? Like I adore the Hollyhock&BoJack friendship, but I am SO HERE for that fallout, because she knows BoJack has done some bad stuff, and forgiven him, but how is she going to react to Penny??
- I don't think I'm ever going to be stressed that BoJack/Diane will be canon by the final season, and I know, I know, Diane found Guy, who did win me over, and they do have a sweet relationship, I don't know why I'm terrified that the writers at last minute might go 'yeah, we're going back to B/D' and I would be very upset. I just don't like that pairing! If B/D was the intended endgame pairing then, I'm glad that the show was cancelled because I don't want it ever to happen! I just. I don't know. It's the one thing I feel nervous about, because of the various hints, that I very much do not like.
- Another complaint: Mister Peanutbutter/Pickles. I just. I'm glad he came clean, eventually, but I need this relationship to end. I kind of felt like that the writers didn't know what to do with him? IDK. Don't care for Pickles, I probably at this point even only like Mister Peanutbutter because he's voiced by Paul F Thompkins. Also, her multiple instances of cheating is just... weird? Just dump him, Pickles.
- While I do think Princess Caroline/Ralph were my favourite ship in the show, (besides Diane/Mr Peanutbutter, which crashed and burned spectacularly), I... I think I'd be open to PC/Judah. Like I missed these two, and it was nice to see them together. Also it was rad to see PC and Vanessa Gecko become genuine friends, and see that the animosity was all one sided! Also I liked that her episode was so musical with the repetitive nature, and seeing how she became really overworked and exhausted, it was nice light on how parenting isn't always sunshine and roses. (Not that this show had made most of the parents Good Parents, but like... PC is definitely trying to be a Good Parent, who genuinely loves her daughter, unlike most of the other parents this show has featured.)
- I liked that we got to see Todd's family! I just. Enjoy Todd. He can do whatever, and be happy.
- Here's the thing, I think, I liked that this show often says 'being a good person is hard work, often it is unrewarding and difficult, and not always possible, because of your previous bad behaviour' and BoJack constantly and consistently backslid and screwed up, and this time he's finally sticking to the program and realizing things about himself, but I'm not sure I liked it when I didn't feel like BoJack had much conflict/temptation?
- Like can BoJack be redeemed after s2 and nearly sleeping with Penny? Can BoJack be redeemed for strangling Gina, when he was in a drug craze, and wanted to let the public know that he could have killed her while shooting Philbert? IDK.
- But I feel this show wants to say that this being good is hard, it's not always valued, it's not always turning out the way you expect, sometimes it's what you deserve, and sometimes it isn't, and it's a pretty good show, regardless.
- Final nitpick: I feel the group felt too separated this season? I can't properly recall for prior seasons, but... usually the group felt together, regardless of the issues they had, and this time, I could really feel the distance, them doing their own things to be better/happier people, but I also missed them as a group? I don't necessarily think that the group of people enabled them to be worse, per say, unlike say, the Always Sunny Gang, but perhaps watching the show in full when it's finally over next year will be worth it.
